Titanic violinist honoured

Wallace Hartley, the violinist who led the Titanic's eight-man orchestra, is one of the latest entrants in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Hartley, who was born in Colne, Lancashire, in 1878, famously played as the Titanic sank in April 1912. He and his fellow musicians were reported to have performed throughout the evacuation, and in some accounts their last tune as the liner sank was 'Nearer, my God, to thee'.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography includes more than 57,000 biographies of men and women who shaped Britain's history. The dictionary was first published in 2004 and is updated three times a year.
