Flood damage to concert hall forces Nashville Symphony to raise funds

The cost to repair the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, damaged during last month’s historic flood, is estimated at about $42 million. The building won’t reopen for concerts until January 2011.

Assistance from FEMA, along with $10 million in flood insurance, will cover a substantial portion of the repair costs. It also will cover the replacement of two Steinway concert grand pianos and the console of the Martin Foundation Concert Organ, all lost during the flood.

But it isn’t enough. The remaining gap could be as much as $10 million. "To close that gap, we are going to have to raise money," said Alan D. Valentine, president and chief executive officer of the Nashville Symphony.
