Lebrecht tackles the issue of agents
With pitched battles going on between the top artists’ agents, there’s little interest in taking on new talent, says the cultural commentator
Focusing his sights on the world of artists’ agents, Norman Lebrecht picks apart the recent conflicts between competing organisations, and asks what good it does the music world.
‘The agency sector is being ravaged by defections, lawsuits and losses. New artists cannot find a manager; veterans are losing faith. A vital underpinning of playing activity is revealing structural cracks.’
‘If you’ve just graduated top of viola in a royal or ancient academy, don’t expect agents to come running any time soon. Don’t expect them even to pick up the phone. They are too busy with turf wars.’
