Cellist Christine Lamprea, 22, has won first prize in the senior division of the Sphinx Competition in Detroit for young Black and Latino string players. Lamprea, who studies with Natasha Brofsky at the New England Conservatory in Boston, received $10,000. Second prize went to violist Dana Kelley, also 22. Double bassist Nicholas Villalobos, 25, took third prize.

In the junior division the $5,000 first prize went to 16-year-old cellist Lev Mamuya, a student of Michael Reynolds at the New England Conservatory. Cellist Sterling Elliott, 13, was awarded second prize, and 17-year-old violinist Annelle Gregory won third prize.
