In a 1964 interview, Szigeti explains the importance of choosing fingering: 'We must look for the line of most resistance, as Artur Schnabel said. Fingerings compel certain expression and it is this faculty of drawing out of our musical treasures the maximum of expressiveness and character and eloquence that seems to be missing nowadays in the superb playing we're surrounded by. Technique has never been more smooth and infallible than in our day but what I miss is precisely this element of risk, of having convictions and daring to convey them.'
