The Chinese cellist will visit the Conservatoire on a regular basis, where he will lead a class of undergraduate and postgraduate students
Jian Wang has been appointed International Chair in Cello at Birmingham Conservatoire, UK. The Chinese cellist, who splits his time between Shanghai and London, will visit Birmingham Conservatoire on a regular basis, where he will lead a class of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
'I am delighted to welcome Jian Wang to Birmingham Conservatoire as our International Chair in Cello,' said principal Julian Lloyd Webber. 'Jian Wang is one of the finest solo cellists in the world today and he will be a great inspiration to all our students. Jian’s appointment is another step on our journey as we head towards opening the first purpose-built conservatoire in a generation in September!'
A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatoire and Yale School of Music, Wang has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras under such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Charles Dutoit and Gustavo Dudamel, and has made numerous recordings, most recently of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Sydney Symphony conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
