Chetham's violin teacher Wen Zhou Li arrested

Thursday, 14 February 2013

A violin teacher at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has been arrested today on suspicion of rape.

Wen Zhou Li, 57, who has taught at both institutions since 1996, is one of at least six current or former music teachers being investigated by police, according to a report in the Guardian.

Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson of Greater Mancheter police said that detectives were looking into more than 20 individual allegations of sexual offences reported by former Chetham's pupils. He added that Li's arrest also relates to historic offences.

Originally from China, Li taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School after coming to England in 1988. He appeared in a Channel 4 documentary, Learning with Mr Li, which focused on his teaching at Chetham's.

An RNCM spokeswoman told the Guardian that Li has been suspended from the college. His profile on the RNCM website has been removed.
