Russian cellist Dmitry Volkov dies aged 26

The cellist’s Russian Trio was named winner of the Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition last month

Monday, 12 May 2014

Dmitry Volkov, cellist of the prize-winning Russian Trio, has died suddenly at the age of 26. The cause of death is currently unexplained.

Volkov’s Baltimore-based piano trio was named the winner of the 29th Annual Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition in Ohio last month, and also won prizes at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition in 2013 and the Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition in 2012.

A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, Russian-born Volkov won both the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition and the Heifetz Institute of Music Concerto Competition in 2009. He was also named the winner of the Midland-Odessa Symphony National Young Artist Competition in 2011. He recorded his first solo album for Urtext in August 2012.

Volkov’s performance at Le Poisson Rouge nightclub in New York was praised in The Strad’s April 2012 issue as ‘highly coloured, flexible playing’ by reviewer Brian Wise.
