Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja appointed artistic partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra

Monday, 03 February 2014

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) of Minnesota, US, has chosen violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja as its artistic partner for the 20014–15 season.

Kopatchinskaja, who is from Moldova, joins current artistic partners, conductors Roberto Abbado and Edo de Waart, pianist Christian Zacharias and violinist Thomas Zehetmair.

The SPCO will be the first major American orchestra to present Kopatchinskaja in concert. In a series of dates spanning 20–30 November 2014, Kopatchinskaja will make her SPCO debut joined by her parents, violinist Emilia Kopatchinskaja and Vikor Kopatchinsky on cimbalom, a concert hammered dulcimer. The programme will include traditional Eastern European music along with Ravel’s Tzigane, Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor.

SPCO senior director of artistic planning, violinist Kyu-Young Kim, said: ‘Patricia Kopatchinskaja’s music making has an intensity and power that just grabs you and doesn't let you go. Her affinity for the core repertoire, combined with her voracious appetite for contemporary music in wildly varied forms makes her a perfect artistic partner for the SPCO.’

Kopatchinskaja is known for her diverse repertoire, which spans from baroque and classical music, often played on gut strings, to new commissions and music of her native country.
