The violist reflects on what he wishes he'd have done differently

I sometimes miss the wonderful range of violin repertoire

I regret that I haven’t been able to play the violin as much during my career as I would have liked. I studied both the violin and viola, and played both instruments in my debut recital at the Southbank Centre. But because I won several prizes and competitions on the viola, people began booking me as a violist. The more solo and chamber music I did, the harder it became to play both instruments to the high standards required. I sometimes miss the wonderful range of violin repertoire. Although I love the viola, I wish that Dvořák, Schumann or Tchaikovsky had written a concerto for it.
