Alexander Velinzon has been appointed concertmaster of the
Seattle Symphony. The Russian-born violinist has been assistant
concertmaster of Boston Symphony Orchestra since 2005. He will
start his new role in June of this year. Velinzon succeeds Maria
Larionoff, who stepped down at the end of the 2010–11 season.
Born in St Petersburg, Velinzon moved to the US in 1990. He studied
with Alexander Markov at the Manhattan School of Music, and later
with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School. He won the Artist
International 1996 Young Artist Auditions and made his New York
recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. In 1999 he
gave his debut New York concerto performance, playing Paganini's
Concerto no.1 in D major with the Jupiter Symphony.
