Cellist Mischa Maisky has announced his first concert engagement following a major surgery, which saw him undertake six months of rehabilitation. The cellist will perform on 16 January at the KKL Luzern, Switzerland, with violinist Janine Jansen and pianist Martha Argerich. The programme has yet to be announced.

Born in Latvia, Maisky is the only cellist to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. Among his many accolades, he was a prizewinner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and won the 1973 Cassadó Competition. Following his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1962, he was dubbed ‘Rostropovich of the future’.

In the video announcement on Instagram, Maisky also wished viewers ‘the most peaceful, healthy and prosperous and joyful New Year, full of musical adventures and discoveries’.
