Event dispenses total of $40,000 to young string players, with three joint winners on violin, viola and cello

The Washington International String Competition has named its 2018 winners, with a first prize each for a violinist, violist and cellist

The three winners, taking home $10,000 each are:

  • Youjin Lee, violin
  • Muriel Razavi, viola
  • Tony Rymer, cello

Second prizes ($5,000 each) went to Maya Buchanan, violin, and Zhanbo Zheng, viola; while third prizes ($1,000 each) to Felicitas Schiffner, violin, and Zhihao Wu, cello.

The judges were violinist Dmitri Berlinsky, violist Rita Porfiris and cellist Paul Katz, founding member of the Cleveland Quartet.

The annual competition rotates through categories of voice, piano and strings, under the auspices of the Friday Morning Music Club Foundation in Washington DC.
