In this video from string maker D’Addario, Japanese-Norwegian violist Masumi Per Rostad performs Max Reger’s Viola Suite no.1 in G minor.
Rostad writes: ‘Max Reger would often compress long harmonic progressions and jam them into just one or two beats. Therefore, I found it fitting to discover that his full name was Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger!
‘This suite is based on the cello suites of Bach and this movement shares the improvisatory fantasy of a prelude. This is incredibly beautiful and fascinating music - Reger deserves to be heard!’
The performance is on a c.1619 Brothers Amati viola with D’Addario Kaplan Forza strings. The bow is by Stephane Thomachot.
