The Nordic Chamber Orchestra has announced the appointment of Malin Broman as its new musical director. A versatile violinist, multi-instrumentalist and player/conductor, Broman is currently concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and takes on this role in addition to her seven-year tenure as artistic director of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in Finland.

’I am deeply grateful and proud to have been entrusted with this leadership role at the Nordic Chamber Orchestra in the coming years,’ said Broman. ’This is a fantastic group of outstanding musicians brimming with knowledge and musicality. It’s an honour to carry forward the orchestra’s proud tradition.

’I look forward to shaping new programmes together, exploring new venues, and bringing symphonic music to a wide and diverse audience. There are so many incredible works yet to be heard and unparalleled masterpieces we are eager to share with you all.’

The Nordic Chamber Orchestra’s music director and head of the music department, Marita Henningsdotter Lovnér, commented: ’In addition to Malin being a fabulous musician, she is also a fantastic leader who, through modern musical leadership, brings out the very best in each individual musician and in the musical collective as a whole.

’Together, we will develop as an orchestra and offer audiences wonderful and diverse concert programmes.’

In addition to being a concertmaster with renowned ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Broman has in recent years gained recognition as a player/conductor. She has led orchestral works and violin concertos from the concertmaster chair, as well as full symphonies by composers such as Dvořák, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, and Bruch.

Broman is deeply passionate about chamber music and has recorded several award-winning CDs, serving as the previous artistic director of the Musica Vitae Chamber Orchestra, founding member of the Kungsbacka Trio and the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble.

Broman currently has two concertos being commissioned specifically for her: one by Swedish composer Emmy Lindström and a double concerto for her and bassist Rick Stotijn by Sally Beamish. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Broman released a viral video of her playing all eight parts in the final movement of Mendelssohn’s Octet.
