This violin by Giovanni Paolo Maggini of 1610 is in virtually mint condition . Authenticated violins by this Brescian maker are at best infrequent visitors to auctions, but the May 1980 sales provide an opportunity to see a bona fide example in almost original state.
DeBeriot once said that nothing quite approaches the haunting alto timbre of a Maggini G string, and if this school has undeservedly earned a reputation of being solely of interest to collectors, here is one that is surely a player's instrument, still retaining the rich, native varnish from those olden times, a choice example of this early master's work.
