The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) in Cardiff has announced the appointment of Jacob Shaw as visiting international chair of cello.

Originally from London, Shaw founded the Scandinavian Cello School in 2016, which holds workshops and masterclasses for cellists throughout the year on a rural Denmark farm. He is also professor of cello at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester.

In his new role at the RWCMD, Shaw will visit the school throughout the academic year to work with students in lessons, coaching and workshops, covering topics from cello performance, chamber music, to entrepreneurship and being a musician in the 21st century.

’It’s such an exciting opportunity to collaborate with this beautiful school and its vibrant musical community,’ commented Shaw.

’After so many years away from the UK, it feels amazing to reconnect and deepen my contribution to music education across the country - this new visiting role in Wales perfectly complements my regular role with the cellists of the RNCM in Manchester as professor of cello.’

Shaw has already completed one week in Cardiff: ’The trip this week to Cardiff was a pleasure – thank you so much for the warm welcome I had from all the staff and students - and I look forward to being back in January!’
