Latvian violist Santa Vižine ‘levels up’ to take the section’s top job

 

The Concertgebouw Orchestra has awarded the solo viola position to Latvian violist Santa Vižine. Colleagues expressed their excitement on social media: ’We are over the moon proud and immensely excited for this young lady to have just won the solo viola position in Concertgebouworkest!’

Vižine has an existing relationship with the orchestra having been a tutti member since 2017, and was previously a member of the Concertgebouw Academy for the 2012/13 season. A native of Riga, she graduated from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy in 2011, becoming a laureate of several Latvian and international music competitions. Prior to her appointment at the Concertgebouw Orchestra, she was principal viola of Gidon Kremer’s Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, working with prolific soloists including Martha Argerich, Mikhail Pletnev, Daniil Trifonov, Lisa Batiashvili, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Didier Lockwood, Mischa Maisky, Mate Bekavac and Sergei Nakariakov.
