Sara Kim will join the faculty at the University of the Arts Bremen from April 2025

The University of the Arts Bremen has announced the appointment of violist Sara Kim as professor of viola and chamber music, effective from 1 April 2025.

Kim takes up the role following her post at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts Leipzig and has also been an adjunct professor at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music and Academy of Music and Performing Arts Munich.

Kim was born in Daejeon, South Korea, and received her musical training at the Gnessin Special School in Moscow and the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, where she switched from violin to viola. She received further training from Berlin University of the Arts as well as the University of Music and Theatre Munich, where she studied with the Artemis Quartet.

She has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals including the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. Kim has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, the Braunschweig State Orchestra, and the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Kim has served as principal viola with the Braunschweig State Orchestra for six years and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for two years. She has also made guest appearances with ensembles including the Deutsche Oper Berlin and MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, Hamburg Philarmonic State Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover, among others.
