The Walther von der Vogelweide Prize Foundation has named violinist Julian Kainrath as recipient of its 2024 Youth Prize. The prize was established in 1960 by the Kulturwerk für Südtirol in Munich to recognise artistic and scientific achievements in South Tyrol.

Kainrath is a previous recipient of the 2022 Discovery Award of the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA). He was born in Merano, Italy, in 2005, and began studying the violin aged six, performing publicly by age ten.

At age 12, Kainrath was admitted to Boris Kuschnir’s class at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He was then selected as ‘student in residence’ at the 26th Verbier Festival aged 14, where he played concerts and attended masterclasses of violinists including Pamela Frank, Donald Weilerstein and Kristóf Baráti. He attended Ilya Gringolts’ class at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, as well as the Sommerakademie Schloss Heiligenberg under the guidance of Marc Bouchkov.

He has studied with Bouchkov at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège in Belgium since 2023. Kainrath is also a scholarship holder of the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein.

Kainrath has performed recitals and concerts with orchestras in Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, and the US. His 2023/24 season saw his debuts at the Sale Apollinee of the Teatro La Fenice and Ristori Baroque Festival in Verona, Leverkusen Sinfonia in Germany, as well as performances with Società del Quartetto di Bergamo, at the Amici della Musica in Padova, at the Austrian Cultural Center in Washington DC, and at the Festival Jeunes Talents in Cannes.
