London’s Royal College of Music (RCM) has appointed four new violin professors to its strings faculty. The appointments include the esteemed British soloist and chamber musician Jennifer Pike, who takes up her professorship from the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year.

In 2020, Pike was honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in recognition of her contributions to classical music. She first gained international recognition aged twelve as the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2002.

Pike is joined by one of the strings world’s most respected orchestral leaders: Peter Manning, former concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. As well as leading the ROH orchestra for 19 years, he also led the London Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras and founded the Britten String Quartet.

Violinists Mathilde Milwidsky and Alexander Gilman complete the line-up of the RCM’s new violin professors.

Earlier this month, cellist Richard Harwood announced that he would be joining the RCM’s strings faculty as professor of cello.

The RCM’s director James Williams commented: ‘It gives me great pleasure to welcome these eminent musicians to join the RCM’s community of string professors, offering our students exceptional learning opportunities through their teaching and performance.’

Gary Ryan, the RCM’s head of strings, added: ‘I’m delighted to welcome a wonderful new cohort of string professors. Together they bring a wealth of international experience as soloists, orchestral players and teachers. All of them are passionate about working with our young musicians and I’m delighted that the students will have the opportunity to benefit from their expertise.’
