The London venue launched the award for international artists in 2007
The Takács Quartet was awarded the Wigmore Hall Medal on Saturday 10 May. Launched in 2007, the award is presented by the London concert hall to an international artist with a strong association with the venue.
The Takács Quartet made its debut at Wigmore Hall in 1979, as Gold medal winner of the inaugural Portsmouth (now Wigmore Hall) International String Quartet Competition. In 2012 the quartet was named Wigmore Hall’s first ever associate artist.
‘We enjoy many of our happiest and most rewarding concert experiences onstage at the Wigmore, and feel deeply honoured to receive this award,’ said Takács first violinist Edward Dusinberre.
This is the first time a string quartet has been awarded the medal. Recent recipients of the award include András Schiff, Thomas Quasthoff, Menahem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott.
