US cellist Jeffrey Zeigler has been appointed as a faculty member of the Mannes School of Music at New School’s College of Performing Arts, New York, US, with immediate effect for the 2024–25 academic year. The appointment marks a rehire for the ex-Kronos Quartet cellist, who previously taught cello and chamber music at Mannes from 2012 to 2022, as co-chair of the string department.
‘Over ten years ago, Mannes welcomed me to New York upon my return to this city following my tenure as cellist of the Kronos Quartet,’ said Zeigler. ‘And once again, the school has welcomed me back with open arms. I am so happy to call this place home once again.’
Richard Kessler, executive dean of the College of Performing Arts and Dean of Mannes School of Music, commented: ‘I was excited when we first hired Jeff Zeigler at Mannes and I am now even more excited to have rehired him in a school that he has helped shape during his prior tenure. Jeff performed Paul Moravec’s Cello Concerto with the Mannes Orchestra during our centennial year in 2016. That was then, and now I am so very much looking forward to what he will do upon his return to the faculty at Mannes.’
As well as his eight-year tenure with the Kronos Quartet, Zeigler has performed as soloist with major ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony and Ulster Orchestra. He is a champion of new music; recent and upcoming concertos written for him include Mark Adamo’s Last Year, Andy Akiho’s Cello Concerto and Amy Brandon’s Simulacra. He has made around 50 recordings for labels including Nonesuch Records, Deutsche Grammophon and Smithsonian Folkways.
Zeigler is director of the National Sawdust Ensemble of National Sawdust, NY. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America and CelloBello, and is on the Honorary Committee of the Sphinx Organization. He plays a cello by Samuel Zygmuntowicz.
