In 2019, a fresh-faced 18-year-old violinist named Johan Dalene claimed victory at the Carl Nielsen International Competition violin final in Odense, Denmark. Here’s a chance to watch his winning performance of the Nielsen Violin Concerto, accompanied by the Odense Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Yaron Traub.
Now 21, the Swedish violinist has recorded the Nielsen Violin Concerto for BIS Records, alongside the Sibelius Violin Concerto. He is currently a current BBC New Generation Artist and ECHO Rising Star, and plays the 1736 ‘Spencer Dyke’ Stradivari.
The 2022 edition of the Carl Nielsen International Competition will take place from 30 March to 10 April, divided into violin, clarinet and flute disciplines. The violin final will take place in two parts: the first of which will be on Friday 8 April, where contestants will perform the Nielsen Violin Concerto; followed by the second on Sunday 10 April, where players will perform their choice of 19th or 20th-century concerto.
Both concerts will be livestreamed here on The Strad website.
