In the May 2018 issue of The Strad, Ray Chen talks about his feats, failures and the digital revolution that has turned him into a violinist of a new generation. ’I didn’t want to wait until I had an established career,’ he says. ‘I wanted to start inspiring the next generation right then. Why not? Even if you can only give small amounts, it still means something. I wanted to show what it meant to be this generation’s artist, to take hold of that responsibility and to have my own voice.’
His debut CD for Decca Classics, ‘Ray Chen: The Golden Age’, is the first on which he has chosen all the pieces himself: ‘Before, I had no part in choosing the repertoire. I was hired in. But when you construct a whole disc like this it’s totally different. You build everything; you develop it.’
