Inaugurated in 1924 and endowed by Walter Willson Cobbett, the medal is presented annually to a musician for services to chamber music
British cellist Steven Isserlis has today been awarded the Cobbett Medal at the Musicians’ Company in London. Inaugurated in 1924 and endowed by Walter Willson Cobbett, the medal is presented annually to a musician for services to chamber music.
This is the third award Isserlis has received this year. In April he won the Wigmore Medal ‘in recognition of his commitment to, and belief in Wigmore Hall and in everything that it represents’. This was followed in May by the 14th Glashütte Original Music Festival Award, which honours ‘achievements in classical music education and support for young artists’, and comes with a €25,000 grant.
Previous Cobbett Medal winners include Edward Elgar, Pablo Casals, William Walton and Yehudi Menuhin.
