A Stradivarian bow: a jewel of four facets

Recent research on the 17th- and 18th-century bows in the collection of the Musée de la Musique in Paris led to the attribution of a bow stick to the Stradivari workshop. Marie-Ève Geeraert and Jean-Philippe Échard shed some light on their discovery of this one-of-a-kind artefact
Over the past decade we have been exploring the vast collection of old bows preserved at the Musée de la Musique, the museum housed at Philharmonie de Paris. The collection includes around 180 bows that pre-date the use of the ferrule and, slowly and carefully, we are updating and adding to the technical and historical documentation on each one of them. One of the nicest bows in the collection is one that has been overlooked for 160 years…
