Competition results

Japanese violinist Hina Maeda, 20, has won first prize and €50,000 at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poznań, Poland. Maeda currently studies at the Tokyo University of Music with Machie Oguri, Koichiro Harada and Mayuko Kamio. The €30,000 second prize was awarded to Meruert Karmenova, 29, from Kazakhstan, while third prize and €20,000 went to Qingzhu Weng, 21, from China.

The Berlin-based Leonkoro Quartet has been awarded the Merito String Quartet Award, which comes with a prize package worth €50,000. Alongside a cash grant, this includes professional development for four years and the commissioning of a new work. The prize is administered by the Merito String Instrument Trust. The quartet comprises violinists Jonathan Schwarz, 26, and Amelie Wallner, 23, violist Mayu Konoe, 25, and cellist Lukas Schwarz, 24.
