The life and career of Amedeo Simonazzi (1891–1974) is intimately bound up with the musical tradition of his native region. For around a century, a style of music prospered across Lower Reggio Emilia, a small region lying between the town of that name and Mantua and Parma. The music was based around small ensembles of stringed instruments, mainly the violin, viola and double bass – a tradition that necessitated a large number of high-quality instruments for the local townsfolk to play…
