Giuseppe Castagnino was born on 4 May 1883 in Cogorno, a village near Chiavari, a small town in the eastern Genoese riviera. His father Pietro, a woodworker and barrel maker as well as an amateur violin maker, taught him the basics of lutherie; from the evidence of Castagnino’s early work it seems very likely that he also received advice from the Candi brothers in Genoa…
