Overlooked masterpiece

Last October I visited the Palazzo Doria Tursi in Genoa, Italy, to satisfy my curiosity and take a close look at Nicolò Paganini’s 1743 Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ violin known as ‘Il Cannone’. In the same room, also on display, there is another violin that belonged to Paganini’s only disciple, Camillo Sivori. This violin is reputedly a copy of ‘Il Cannone’ which Paganini commissioned from luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume as a gift for his student…
