25-year-old cellist Moritz Huemer will start his new role in May 2025

Moritz Huemer has won the audition to join the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic. The 25-year-old from Liechtenstein has been a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2022 and has since performed regularly with the orchestra.

Huemer has also regularly performed as the section leader in the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble Esperanza chamber orchestra. He won third prize in the competition ’Ton und Sicherheit’ in March 2022 and since 2021, Huemer has been a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and the Villa Musica Academy for Chamber Music. 

Huemer was born in Feldkirch (Austria) in 1999 and grew up in Liechtenstein. He received his first cello lessons at the age of five from Josef Hofer at the Liechtenstein Music School. From 2015 to 2018, he was a young student in Rafael Rosenfeld’s class at the Basel Music Academy and at the same time, attended the high school in Feldkirch, where he graduated in summer 2018. He studied with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar, as well as Jens Peter Maintz at the University of the Arts in Berlin.

Huemer has taken part in various masterclasses, including with Maintz, David Geringas and Thomas Grossenbacher. He received a scholarship from the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, additionally taking part in its intensive music weeks and activities.
