The ‘Marathon Pour Tous’ was run by more than 20,000 members of the public and followed the same route as the Olympics marathon
On the night of 10–11 August, French cellist Gautier Capuçon took part in the Paris 2024 ‘Marathon Pour Tous’ (‘Marathon for All’), a mass-participation event that saw more than 20,000 members of the public running the official Olympics marathon route. He completed the full 26.2 mile/42.2km course in 4 hours, 20 minutes and 47 seconds. The cellist had already participated in the 2024 Olympics as both a torchbearer and performer.
The public event was organised for the first time at the Paris 2024 Olympics and was open to runners of all abilities. Alongside the 42.2km marathon distance, a 10km race also took place, attracting an additional 20,000 runners.
The new event hoped to give ’as many people as possible to get close to the heart of the Games adventure,’ according to the Olympics website.
On social media Capuçon said of the experience: ’A historic and absolutely magical Marathon Pour Tous, even though it was very difficult!’
The marathon was run in a loop linking Paris and Versailles and finishing at Les Invalides. The 20,024 runners began the race at Paris’s Hôtel de Ville at 9pm and passed the towns of Boulogne-Billancourt, Sèvres, Ville d’Avray, Versailles, Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon and Issy-les-Moulineaux on the way. The course was particularly challenging and hilly with 436 metres of ascent, 438 metres of descent and a maximum gradient of 13.5 per cent.
