The violist of the Dover Quartet, Julianne Lee, has announced that she will leave the ensemble at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Lee joined the Dover Quartet in September 2023, after Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt left the group in August 2022

The group announced Lee’s departure on social media as it embarks on its 2024-25 season, describing the news as ‘bittersweet.’

’Being part of one of the world’s most in-demand quartets requires being on the road much of the time, and I’ve realised that this schedule doesn’t align as well with my lifestyle as a position with a home orchestra does.’

Prior to joining the Dover Quartet, Lee served as assistant principal second violin of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and principal second violin with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

’I’ve missed the routine and musical experiences of the Boston Symphony, and I will be returning to the orchestra in July for the Tanglewood season,’ she said.

The remaining members of the Dover Quartet, comprising violinist Joel Link and Bryan Lee, and cellist Camden Shaw, thanked Lee for her time with the ensemble, saying ’we’re so grateful for your time, expertise, wisdom and your friendship.’

The quartet plans to audition replacements over the next year, with the aim to announce a new viola appointment in spring 2025.

The Dover Quartet currently serves as the Penelope P. Watkins ensemble in residence at the Curtis Institute of Music and holds additional residencies at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and the Walton Arts Center’s Artosphere festival.

It recently gave the premiere performance of Woodland Songs by American Indian composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. Upcoming season highlights include performances in the Czech Republic and Greece, as well as numerous appearances across the US.
