Three violinists will play in the final round on Saturday 24 August for the chance to win the top prize of CHF5,000 (£4,400)

The finalists of the Tibor Junior International Violin Competition have been announced, following the competition’s semi-final round on 22 August 2024, which took place at Pôle Musique in Sion, Switzerland.

The three finalists who will proceed to the final round on 24 August are: Corina Deng, 16, from Canada, Viktor Vasilev, 17, from Bulgaria and Qingyuan Yang, 14, from China.

Deng will receive an award for the best interpretation of the competition’s commissioned work by Ana Sokolović, Onde, punti, voci, which competitors performed in the semi-final.

The final round will take place at the Théâtre de Valère. Competitors will perform the violin part to Erbarme dich, mein Gott from Bach’s St Matthew Passion, BWV 244, to be played with mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis; one piece from a prescribed list of works by Tchaikovsky, Paganini, Waxman, Saint Saëns or Sarasate, accompanied by the strings of the South Czech Philharmonic; as well as an encore for solo violin of the candidate’s choice.

The prizes up for grabs include first prize of CHF5,000 (£4,000), second prize of CHF2,000 (£1,700), third prize of CHF1,000 (£880), an audience prize, jury prize and a one-year loan of a c.1735 Nicolò Gagliano violin.

The winner of the 2023 edition, Seohyun Kim, will make an appearance to perform Tartini’s Violin Sonata ’Devil’s Trill’ at the end of the evening.

The 2024 jury comprises Pavel Vernikov (president of the jury), Marie-Claude Chappuis, Mario Hossen, Alexandre Vinnitski, Eduard Wulfson and Ana Sokolović.

The competition is open to violinists of all nationalities aged 14 to 17. It takes place every two years since its inception in 2018, alternating with its senior counterpart, the Tibor Varga Competition.
