Both Ukrainian violinist Georgii Moroz and German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist Elias David Moncado were awarded second prize
The 3rd Alberto Lysy International Violin Competition finals took place on 20 October at the Kirchgemeindehaus in Gstaad, Switzerland. No first prize was awarded. Instead, the second prize was jointly awarded to Ukrainian violinist Georgii Moroz and German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist Elias David Moncado. Each violinist received CHF4,000 (£3,500).
The third prize of CHF2,000 (£1,775) went to Chinese violinist Meng Zou. The competitors were whittled down from 100 applicants after three rounds of competition.
Moroz has also been granted a loan of a fine violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume for four years, and Moncado will perform a solo recital at the 2025 Gstaad New Year Music Festival. The Audience Award also went to Moroz, and entails a recital performance at the 2025 summer festival concert series ’Matinées des Jeunes Etoiles’.
Moroz completed his bachelor of music in 2023 at the Yong Siew Toh (YST) Conservatory of Music (Singapore). He is currently studying at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin with Antje Weithaas. He is finalist of the International Jean Sibelius Competition (2022), second prize winner of the Munetsugu Angel Violin Competition (2023), and a semi-finalist of both the Singapore International Violin Competition (2022) and Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition (2024). He has played as a soloist with orchestras including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, YST Symphony Orchestra, Chubu Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
Moncado has been a scholarship holder of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation since 2023, and in 2024 he was selected as a laureate of the Gautier Capuçon Foundation. In 2019, he become the youngest winner of the International Karol Lipiński Violin Competition, where he also won ten special prizes. He also won the 2023 International Vladimir Spivakov Competition, and was the youngest prize winner at the 2019 International Sendai Violin Competition. He has performed as a soloist with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Göttinger Symphonieorchester, and others.
The 2024 jury comprised Adelina Oprean, Oleg Kaskiv, Pablo de Naveran, Lukas Wittermann, and Dong-Suk Kang.
