Violinist Roberto Cani has died aged 57 at his home in Los Angeles, US, on 9 April 2025, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. The Italian-born musician was concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra since May 2011. He was also on the faculty of California State University, Northridge.

Cani was born on 17 October 1967 in Milan, Italy, and studied at the Milan Conservatory of Music where he won the Minetti Prize in 1986, the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow and the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He was a prizewinner at the 1990 Paganini and 1994 Tchaikovsky competitions.

As a chamber musician, Cani was first violinist of the Hollywood Quartet and collaborated with musicians including the late cellist Lynn Harrell and pianists Justus Franz and Jeffrey Swann.

Cani played a 1735 Guarneri ‘del Gesù’. He was also a skilled maker, especially of violin bows.

In a statement, LA Opera said, ‘We are heartbroken to share that Roberto Cani has sadly passed away. His tenure as LA Opera’s Stuart Canin Concertmaster began in 2011. Renowned on stages around the world, Roberto was a singular talent, invaluable leader, and incredible colleague. His constant collaboration with Music Director James Conlon played a crucial role in fostering the success and distinct sound of the LAO Orchestra. Roberto’s warmth, knowledge, and artistry will be dearly missed. We extend our most sincere condolences to his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.’

Cani is survived by his wife Elena and daughter Sofia; an appeal has been launched to help them with medical and funeral expenses.
