Czech cellist Vilem Vlcek took first prize of €7,000 as well a future concerto engagement

The final round for the cello category of the Markneukirchen International Competition was held on Friday 12 May at Musikhalle Markneukirchen. Four finalists performed Haydn Cello Concerto no.2 in D major accompanied by the Clara-Schumann Philharmonic conducted by Leo Siberski.

First prize was awarded to Vilem Vlcek from Czech Republic. He received €7,000 donated by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, as well as a concert engagement with the Chursächsische Philharmonie of Bad Elster.

Born in 1998, Vlcek has been studying in the class of Danjulo Ishizaka at the Basel Academy of Music since 2018. He has won first prize at the Liezen Cello Competition, Talents for Europe, Heran Cello Competition, Competition of Czech Conservatories, Jan Vychytil Cello Competition, as well as the 2022 Rahn Music Prize.

As a soloist, Vlcek has performed with orchestras including the Czech Philharmonic, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Second prize of €5,000 went to Polish cellist Gustaw Bafeltowski, while third prize of €3,000 went to Tzu-Shao Chao from Taiwan. Canadian cellist Grace Sohn was placed fourth. All prizewinners received a selection of accessories, strings and vouchers.

The jury was chaired by Julius Berger and comprised Mats Lidström, Alexandra Guțu, Edward King, Josef Schwab, Gustavo Tavares, Marcin Zdunik, Valentin Erben and Csaba Onczay.
