The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has announced Norwegian violinist David Coucheron and US violinist Kevin Lin as its new co-principal guest concertmasters. They will begin in the 2024-25 season and share concertmaster duties for several weeks within the season. During this time, the orchestra will continue its search for a permanent leader.

Coucheron is a graduate of the Juilliard School and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2010, he was appointed as concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, becoming the youngest concertmaster in any major US orchestra at the time. He has worked with conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovich and Charles Dutoit, and performed as a soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Sendai Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.

On social media, Coucheron said about the news: ’I am deeply honoured to join the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Co-Principal Guest Concertmaster. My past experiences with the orchestra were highlighted by the tremendous talent and passion of its musicians and I look forward to contributing to SSO’s musical excellence in the upcoming 2024/25 season.’ He will also join the orchestra on its tour to Australia in February 2025.

Lin is the current concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and was previously the co-leader of the London Phiharmonic Orchestra. He has also appeared as guest concertmaster in the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, the Houston Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Taiwan Philharmonic and the SSO. He is a graduate of the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles and winner of the 2013 Irving Klein International String Competition.

About the appointment, Lin said on social media: ’I have many fond memories with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, from our first performance together in 2019 to adjudicating at its National Piano & Violin Competition last year. So I am eager to strengthen my relationship with the SSO further in this new role and connect with the Singapore audiences on a deeper level.’

On its Facebook page, the orchestra said, ’We are thrilled to welcome David and Kevin and look forward to the exceptional artistry they will bring to our upcoming performances. You can catch David this Saturday in the first concert of our 2024/25 season, Time for Trumpets!’
