The new players join the first violin, cello and bass sections

The San Francisco Symphony and its music director Esa-Pekka Salonen have welcomed new musicians to the orchestra for the 2024-25 season. They include Anne Richardson as associate principal cello, Davis You as fourth chair cello, Bowen Ha as fourth chair bass, Orion Miller as section bass, and Jeein Kim as section first violin.

The string players have been appointed alongside bass trombonist Christopher Basset and second clarinet Yuhsin Galaxy Su.

Cellist Anne Richardson takes up the Peter & Jacquline Hoefer chair. She was most recently an academy fellow with the Bavarian Radio Symphony and has performed with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and Pittsburgh Symphony. She has performed as a soloist throughout the US and performed in numerous festivals as a chamber musician.

Cellist Davis You is a Bay Area native and has been appointed to the Lyman & Carol Casey Second Century chair. He recently received his bachelor of music from New England Conservatory (NEC), where he studied with Laurence Lesser and Paul Katz, and regularly appeared as principal cello of the NEC Philharmonia. He was a member of Quartet Luminera, which won the silver medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.  

Bassist Bowen Ha takes up the Metcalf Second Century chair. Originally from Shanghai, he earned a bachelor of music from the Juilliard School, where he is currently a master’s student studying with Timothy Cobb and Harold Robinson. He has won prizes at numerous competitions and participated in festivals including the Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program at the University of North Texas, Verbier Festival Orchestra, and Aspen Music Festival as an orchestral leadership fellow. 

Violinist Jeein Kim joins the orchestra’s first violin section, holding the Isaac Stern chair. She was previously a member of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra and has been a substitute musician with the Chicago Symphony. She studied at Yale School of Music, New England Conservatory and Yonsei University, and attended the Taos School of Music, Heifetz Summer Institute, and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

Bassist Orion Miller is a graduate of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where he studied with Timothy Pitts. He has been a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of West, and Aspen Music Festival. His accolades include first prize in the Ruth Burr Competition and second prizes in the Lynn Harrell Competition and International Society of Bassists Orchestral Competition.

The new players will perform their first concerts with the orchestra in the Music from Studio Ghibli programme from 5 to 8 September, featuring composer and conductor Joe Hisaishi, which is sold out.
