15 string players have been selected to play in the competition’s semi-finals in December this year
The National String Competition in New Zealand has announced the names of its semi-finalists for 2024. This year’s competition runs from 14-16 December in Auckland and offers a first prize of $5,000 and further performance engagements. It is open to string players up to the age of 25 who are either a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, or who have been enrolled as a student at a recognised New Zealand school for two or more consecutive years.
In alphabetical order, the semi-finalists are:
Tal Amoore – viola, Auckland
Amy Chen – violin, Auckland
Hayden Chiu – violin, Auckland
Damon Herlihy-O’Brien – cello, Auckland
Boudewijn Keenan – cello, Auckland
Ingrid Kosaka – cello, Christchurch
Sarah Lee – violin, Auckland
Hyun Jae Lee – cello, Auckland
Anna Junghyun Lee – violin, Tauranga/Boston
Rose Light – violin, Graz, Austria
Enshean ‘Sheena’ Lin – violin, Palmerston North
Angel Tao – violin, Auckland
Mana Waiariki – violin, Wellington
Ryan Yeh – cello, Auckland
Lorna Zhang – violin, Auckland
The alternates are cellist Kimberley Yuan from Auckland, cellist Max Chen from Auckland, and violinist Lucas Baker from Wellington.
The semi-finalists were selected by the preliminary judges Ioana Cristina Goicea and Victoria Simonsen, while the semi-final and final rounds will be judged by Dene Olding.
