The Russian violinist was a long-time member of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and the Bolshoi Theatre Violin Ensemble
Russian violinist Marta Kushnirskaya, who was born in Moscow in 1933, died on 22 February. Born to a musical family, her father was a cellist and her mother a pianist. She studied with Valeria Merenblum and later with Veniamin Sher at the Leningrad Conservatory, completing her postgraduate studies in 1962.
Kushnirskaya performed with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra for over 30 years, and became a permanent member of the Bolshoi Theatre Ensemble until it dissolved in 1984. She continued to play with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra until 1995, and then began teaching at the Maimonid State Classical Academy in Moscow.
More than ten years ago, she also founded the Magic Violins chamber orchestra. Comprising only female violinists playing without sheet music, the ensemble will be touring Peru in April.
