The Helix Trio scooped the top prize which includes €5,000, future concert engagements and interview opportunities

The 2024 edition of the Filippo Nicosia International Award took place on 31 August at the Villa Medici Giulini, Milan, Italy. The award is dedicated to string quartets and trios, with eleven ensembles performing works by their choice of composers in a competition, following two days of masterclasses.

The Helix Trio won first prize, with its performances of Turnia Trio no.2, op.76 and Shostakovich Trio no.1, op.8. The Swiss-based Spanish ensemble won €5,000, future concert engagements, vouchers worth €350 offered by G. Henle Verlag Publishers, as well as an interview opportunities with Archi magazine and ‘thefeelgoodstation’ radio station.

Special recognition went to Trio Kobalt, for its performance of Brahms Trio no.2 op.87. The ensemble secured a recording debut with the Da Vinci label and access to the Steinway Hall with the use of its Steinway D grand piano for rehearsals or recordings offered by Casa Musicale Del Rio.

Francesca Boscarato, second violinist of Thumós Quartet, was awarded a violin made by Cremonese luthier Giorgio Grisales in recognition of her talent.

The Marmottes Atomiques Quartet from Geneva won a special prize from Casa Musicale Del Rio as the youngest participating ensemble, with an average age of 12 years.

The jury was chaired by Cristiano Gualco (violinist, Quartetto di Cremona) and comprised Simone Gramaglia (violist, soloist, Quartetto di Cremona), Eckart Runge (cellist, soloist, founding member of the Artemis Quartet), Oliver Wille (violinist, Kuss Quartet), and Antonio Valentino (pianist, Trio Debussy, artistic director of Unione Musicale di Torino).

This year’s calendar pays tribute to some of these priceless treasures, including Yehudi Menuhin’s celebrated ‘Lord Wilton’ Guarneri, the Carlo Bergonzi once played by Fritz Kreisler, and four instruments by Antonio Stradivari.
