Sinfonia Cymru has announced the appointment of violinist Haim Choi as its new orchestral leader. Choi will begin her role this month with the Welsh orchestra, which comprises members under the age of 30.

Alumna of both the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music, 28-year-old violinist Choi has been performing with Sinfonia Cymru for three years, recently leading tours with saxophonist Jess Gillam and guitarist Sean Shibe. She is a member of the Salomé Quartet. Choi has also performed regularly in other Sinfonia Cymru orchestral projects as well as the Mainly Village Halls tours.

As leader, she will continue to feature in orchestral and chamber scale projects as well as having valuable input in music choices, programming direction, auditions and talent searches, alongside creative associate Simmy Singh and Sinfonia Cymru’s management team.

Choi said, ’I’m delighted and honoured to continue my work with Sinfonia Cymru as its new leader, a role that enables me to make music with wonderful friends and colleagues, under the ethos of bringing excellent music to wide audiences. I have had a variety of memorable Sinfonia Cymru projects over the past years and look forward to many more eclectic, versatile, and creative collaborations over the next seasons.’

Caroline Tress, chief executive of Sinfonia Cymru, said ’We are thrilled that Haim will be joining the artistic team as orchestral Leader. Her extraordinary talent, versatility, and passion for collaborating with like-minded musicians and ensembles of all sizes makes her an ideal fit for Sinfonia Cymru as we embark on our next musical adventures.’

Previous leaders of Sinfonia Cymru have gone on to positions with other major music organisations. Most recently, Roberto Ruisi went on to become leader of the Hallé and his predecessor, Caroline Pether, now leads Manchester Camerata.
