The cellist joins the cast of indie film All Five Eyes, which is currently filming in Kent, UK
British-German cellist Sophie Kauer has landed a role in All Five Eyes, following her breakout film role in Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated film TÁR in 2022.
Directed by Jaclyn Bethany, All Five Eyes takes place in a small English village in 1967, exploring themes of identity, sisterhood and social change. Kauer will play the role of Helena, a precocious schoolgirl, alongside a cast that includes Honor Swinton Byrne and Greta Bellamacina.
The film is co-written by Bethany and Bellamacina and tells the story of two sisters as they care for their disabled younger sister.
’Their differences reach a boiling point over their relationship with Willa, which leads to each sister making their own decision on what it means to have a life worth living,’ reads the logline.
Kauer garnered international recognition and praise for her role in TÁR, where she starred as Olga Metkina, a Russian cellist and protégé, alongside Cate Blanchett’s titular character. Her film debut showcased her not only as an actor, but as a cellist, where she had to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto.
‘I’m truly grateful for all the incredibly creative and fulfilling opportunities that have come my way, and am very excited to continue pursuing my passions in both film and music,’ says Kauer.
Following her appearance in TÁR, Kauer begain a collaboration with the Deutsche Grammophon recording label, and became the youngest artist to reach no.1 on the Classical On-Demand Audio Streaming chart with her debut EP, Unsung.
Kauer has continued her studies with Torlief Thedéen at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and is also taking part in the Scandinavian Cello School (SCS) Young Artist Scheme.
Her upcoming 2024-25 season will see her perform at international concert venues, including Dukes Hall (London), Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall (Yerevan) and Oslo Konserthus. She has commissioned various new pieces from female composers to premiere, in a commitment to support underrepresented voices in classical music.
Kauer is also an ambassador for the Cheryl King Trust, a charity dedicated to funding music tuition for financially disadvantaged children.
