22 violists and 21 violinists will compete in the competition held at the Berlin University of the Arts from 19 to 25 October
The 2024 International Max Rostal Competition has announced contestants for this year’s edition, to be held at the Berlin University of the Arts from 19 to 25 October 2024.
Over 40 musicians have been chosen following the application round, which was held via video submission. The competition is open to violinists and violists up to age 29.
Since 2009, the competition has held the violin and viola disciplines simultaneously, having previously been held in alternately at the Bern Conservatory since 1991. Contestants will perform over three rounds for a prize pool totaling €23,000.
First prize of €7,000 will be offered to each discipline, with €3,000 and €1,500 for second and third prize respectively. An audience prize of €1,000 will be awarded in each discipline, as well as €500 each for best interpretation of the commissioned work and the special prize of the Freunde Junger Musiker Berlin e.V. The first three prize winners in each discipline will also receive sets of strings by Pirastro.
The viola competition will begin its first round on Saturday 19 October and culminate in the final round with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Pavel Baleff on Thursday 24 October. The violin first round will begin after the viola round on Sunday 20 October and finish on Friday 25 October.

The jury for the 2024 competition will be chaired by David Geringas and comprises Marianne Piketty, Kyung Sun Lee, Christoph Poppen, Lars Anders Tomter, Nils Mönkemeyer and Carol Rodland.
Robin Wilson, Nurit Stak and Emi Ohi Resnick served as the violin preliminary selection jury, while Hans Peter Ochsenhofer, Francoise Gneri and Matthias Buchholz formed the viola preliminary selection jury.
