Three contestants from each discipline will perform a concerto in the final rounds on 24 and 25 October, for the chance to win prizes totalling €23,000
The 2024 International Max Rostal Competition is currently underway at the Berlin University of the Arts. Following the first two rounds of the viola and violin disciplines that commenced on 19 and 20 October respectively, three finalists from each category have been selected to perform in the final round.
The viola finalists are Brian Isaacs (US), Marina Kosaka (Japan) and Kyungsik Shin (South Korea). The violists will perform a concerto on Thursday 24 October at the Berlin University of the Arts Concert hall. Isaacs and Kosaka will play the Walton Viola Concerto, while Shin has opted for the Bartók Viola Concerto.
The violin finalists are YiWei Gu (China), Benjamin Günst (Germany) and Varvara Vasylieva (Ukraine). Both Gu and Günst will perform Prokofiev Violin Concerto no.1, while Vasylieva will perform Schumann Violin Concerto at the final round on Friday 25 October at the Berlin University of the Arts Concert hall.
Both finals will be accompanied by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, conducted by Pavel Baleff.
With a prize pool totalling €23,000, first prize of €7,000 will be offered to each discipline, with €3,000 and €1,500 for second and third prize respectively.
An audience prize of €1,000 will be awarded in each discipline, as well as €500 each for best interpretation of the commissioned work and the special prize of the Freunde Junger Musiker Berlin e.V. The first three prize winners in each discipline will also receive sets of strings by Pirastro.
The jury for the 2024 competition will be chaired by David Geringas and comprises Marianne Piketty, Kyung Sun Lee, Christoph Poppen, Lars Anders Tomter, Nils Mönkemeyer and Carol Rodland.
