The nominations are for Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, recorded with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel
In 2021, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers commissioned Mexican composer Arturo Márquez to write a mariachi-themed violin concerto, Fandango. Its 2023 recording, with Meyers, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel, received a Grammy nomination in 2023.
The work has now been nominated for two 2024 Latin Grammy Awards in the Classical field:
For Best Classical Album: Fandango, Anne Akiko Meyers & baritone Gustavo Castillo; Gustavo Dudamel, conductor; Dmitry Lipay, album producer (Los Angeles Philharmonic)
For Best Classical Contemporary Composition: Fandango – Arturo Márquez, composer (Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, Anne Akiko Meyers).
The work was recorded with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel, via three live concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall. For the work, Márquez took inspiration from his late father, who was a mariachi violinist.
’Thank you so much for asking me to write this mariachi-inspired violin concerto – I have been waiting decades to write it,’ Márquez told Meyers.
Meyers has performed Fandango with over 25 orchestras across the US since its premiere at the Hollywood Bowl in 2021.
2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the Latin Grammy Awards. The awards will be announced on Thursday, 14 November at the Kaseya Center in Miami, FL.
