14-year-old violinist Hayden Chiu receives NZ$5,000 and performance opportunities
The 2024 National String Competition concluded 16 December at the Westlake Girls High School Event Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
The NZ$5,000 first prize was awarded to violinist Hayden Chiu, 14, along with a performance opportunity with the Auckland Philharmonia and a recital at the Lewis Eady Steinway Showroom. He also won the NZ$500 prize for the best performance of a New Zealand work. Chiu is currently a student at Auckland Grammar School and studies the violin with Stephen Larsen and Robin Wilson.
The second prize of NZ$3,000 was won by violinist Sarah Lee, 20, and the third prize of NZ$1,000 by cellist Ryan Yeh, 13. The NZ$1,000 prize for the best performance of a classical sonata was won by cellist Hyun Jae Lee.
The final round was adjudicated by violinist Dene Olding.
