The former governor of the Yehudi Menuhin School died peacefully at her home on 31 July
The Honourable Zamira Menuhin Benthall, daughter of legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Nola Nicholas, has died peacefully at her home on 31 July at the age of 84. Her funeral will take place on 16 August in Pembury, Kent, UK.
Menuhin Benthall was born in 1939 and spent much of her life continuing her father’s work, serving as a governor and vice-president for the Yehudi Menuhin School for many years. Between 1960–1969 she was married to Chinese pianist Fou Ts’ong, with whom she had one child, Lin Siao Fou-Menuhin. She later married British anthropologist Jonathan Charles Mackenzie Benthall in 1975, with whom she had children William Jonathan Menuhin Benthall and Dominic Gabriel Menuhin Benthall. The latter has served as a governor at the Menuhin school since his mother’s retirement.
The Yehudi Menuhin School paid tribute to Menuhin Benthall through a social media post:
‘We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zamira Menuhin Benthall… As Yehudi’s daughter, Zamira was a beloved member of our community. Present and former pupils will know that until recently she was a frequent visitor to the school who knew all the pupils personally and took a keen interest in their progress. We are enormously grateful for her dedication to supporting her father’s vision for the school as well as contributing to many other initiatives to make the arts accessible to wider audiences.
‘She will be deeply missed by everyone connected with the Yehudi Menuhin School and will be remembered for her generosity and kindness. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family at this sad time.’
